Formal explorations:
2. Material Workshop by Sankalpa
The workshop intended:
1. To identify tectonic characteristics of a given material and express it in the form of
opposing spatial experience.
2. To express spatial experience as a constraint e.g. weaving to the choice of the construction
process.
3. To design space in order to communicate an architectural experience.
Process:
The process started by looking at brick as a material where lightness and elevation are observed. The idea
of using thin brick walls to make the pavilion look light and delicate was explored.
For this, I started looking different brick bonds and jaali patterns that could be used and how
different brick bonds could be weaved together to create a pattern that makes the pavilion look
delicate and porous.

Plan:
The plan of the pavilion shows how the seatings, shelves, different brick patterns, the idea
of openness bringing natural light and having a visual connection with the outside has been incorporated

Learnings:
For better understanding, we need to have a command over realization to structural forces. Since
brick is a unit module good in compression, the aspect of heaviness is felt when many of these unitary modules
come together. The lightness could be felt only when you experience the contrast of it. Also, the roof plays a very
important role in modulating the light quality hence should be given a thought.
