Mass Inhabitation- Assisted Living

diagrammatic model.jpg

The housing typology is imagined as an assisted living facility since it is currently occupied by a lot of old people.

The model is a complete retrofit project of the existing structure retrofitted by providing common spaces at different levels.

This would be done by the income generated by making ground and first floor for commercial shops and since there is a road nearby the inhabitants wish to go on a higher floor because of the noise created, so two floors would be added in each bar building for rehab.

Since there will be common spaces provided at different levels, the inhabitants will be rehabilitated by adding 1 floor in each C building.

Also, an extension of 20% would be given to every every house

1 floor will be added in C building for rental housing which would generate recurring income for the society.

For assisted living,

Some of the common spaces that will be added are the common community kitchen, a common library, fitness Center, activity Center and the existing community hall which could become the exhibition or workshop space.

The terrace having a walking track becomes an interaction spot which is connected by bridges to all the four buildings.

Interconnecting the terraces by introducing walking tracks.

Possibilities of extensions:

In the existing situation , there is a linear corridor that runs having no vertical interaction within the floors.

The extension to the existing houses is imagined as an alternate staggered skin having different affordances and increasing the vertical interaction between floors. The extensions are imagined to be dynamic which becomes a collage of different things happening on the facade.

The common spaces are imagined to be in different parts of the building in order to increase the interaction within the entire building instead of them being stacked one above the other. The community kitchen on the ground floor becomes a node to connect both the wings which in the existing condition are separated. The plans show the alternate stagger having common spaces in different parts of the built form. There are instances where at some points two common spaces are connected by a bridge increasing the interaction between the two buildings.

A new skin is added in the form of portals made up of steel hollow sections that carry the load of the new floors added without causing stress on the existing structure and in a way increases vertical interaction and affords various other activities. The roof is imagined to be partially sloping according to the Mumbai's climatic conditions which is negotiated by a flat terrace that becomes a walking track connecting all the 4 buildings
